For the 19-year-old Alice Kingsley (Mia Wasikowska), life is a surprise in holding: During a Victorian garden party, organized in her honor, she receives a marriage proposal from Hamish, the wealthy but dull son of Lord and Lady Ascot. Alice escapes and remains the company to answer. It follows a strange white rabbit wearing a vest and carrying a pocket watch with him.
The rabbit (running voiced by Michael Sheen) over a meadow and then disappears into a hole in the ground. Equally suddenly Alice is drawn into the hole and fall through a strange, dreamlike passage, until it finally ends up in a round room with many doors. After brief initial difficulties, which include a bottle marked “Drink me” and a cake, decorated with the words “Eat me”, manages to Alice, with the help of the shrinking effect of the potion and the magnifying effect of the cake is one of the doors open, and of passing. She enters a magical world that is known to its inhabitants under the name of the lowlands.
There she meets an eclectic mix of characters, from the audacious Dormouse (Barbara Windsor) to completely Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Cheshire Cat (voiced by STEPHEN FRY) to the hookah smoking caterpillar, Absalom (voiced by ALAN RICKMAN), scary by the White Queen (ANNE HATHAWAY) to their hateful and moody older sister and mistress of the lowlands, the Queen of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter).
